Profile of Michael Beavers

On the outside, he may appear intimidating, with a scraggly brown and auburn colored beard; shaggy un-kept hair, and a barreling chest. He looks like a mix between Jack Black and a mountain man. His occasional Bob Marley t-shirt may give you the impression he’s a bit of a hippie. But if you take the time to talk with him, you’ll realize he’s not intimidating at all. He’s mild-mannered, likes to watch South Park, listens to Bob Seger, and will someday be teaching your 4th grade daughter.

“I think I have a lot to bring to the classroom.” Michael said, as he sipped his morning coffee. “Not saying teachers out there are bad, I just I have a lot of great ideas to make learning fun for kids.”

Teaching is not his only passion. He loves fishing and riding his 4-wheeler. He grew up just outside of Lawton a couple of miles on small fourteen-acre farm with his mother, Wendy, father, Mike Sr., and sister, Sheenah.

As you pull into the driveway of the Beavers’ residence you notice the garage on the left-hand side, the big red barn straight ahead, and the house off to the right a little bit.

“My parents have lived in this house since they got married, and I’ll probably buy it from them once I graduate and get a job.”

Mike hopes to get a teaching job around the Sioux City area, but ideally, he would work at his alma mater, Lawton-Bronson.

“ I went to that school my entire life. I love it there. I think it’d be great to give back and be a part of it again.”

Being a teacher seems to fit Michael’s personality very well. He has a very genuine concern for people and it’s easy to see how he would be able to turn that concern into a successful teaching career.

“I really enjoy helping the kids that are trouble makers. It’s painfully obvious that they’re just starved for attention, so I give them that attention they need, but also do it in a manner that doesn’t encourage the bad behavior.”

Not only is the teaching a good fit for his personality, but it works for his fishing hobby as well. During the summers while classes are out, Mike enjoys heading up to Yankton, SD where he and his “pops” put their new camper, just 60 feet from the Missouri River.

“ My old man and I will take up a couple boxes of worms and some steaks; we have ourselves a good ol’ time.”

Michael hopes to take his love for the outdoors and incorporate it in the classroom.

“It’s important to keep kids interested in school and by changing things up from time to time, whether it’s a field trip, or going out and looking at the grass and plants, it allows the kids to be hands-on. And I’ve found that that holds their interest better than staring at books all day.”

Michael’s passion for teaching has been evident since he was a young boy.

“He’s always wanted to be a teacher, ever since he was probably ten years old.” Said Sheenah, Michael’s older sister, and only sibling. “He’s had a knack for helping others and has always been genuinely concerned with the well-being of others.”

His sister may be biased, but his fellow classmate Amanda Morton agrees 100% with Sheenah,

“He is always energetic when he talks about student-teaching and being in the classroom. Students will definitely be lucky to have a teacher like Mike” Morton said. “He’s really good at applying concepts from our education classes to the classroom with kids.”

Michael is set to graduate from Morningside in December of 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Feature Story–the Lede

Don’t judge a book by its cover. This principle holds true for Morningside Senior, Michael Beavers.

He’s fairly mild-mannered, likes to watch South Park, listens to Bob Seger, and is an aspiring elementary school teacher. Yes, a teacher.

Apparently Syria has prepared chemical bombs in anticipation of a battle to the death with Lebanon.

I think this article fits well into the “current events” category and is very relevant, especially to the FoxNews.com audience. They talk about Hillary Clinton, the head dude from Russia, and other officials who are working closely with this whole situation. The lede sucks in this article, actually. It talks about Hillary meeting with russia’s leading diplomat. I didn’t wanna continue reading after that, but in order to find out what was going on I kept reading. I’m getting sick of FoxNews.com to be honest. I’m glad this is the last week.

So, apparently Guantanamo Bay inmates may be placed in normal prisons around the nation. It would appear that the proposition that was opposed by Congress may in fact come to volition.

I think this article fits the conservative audience well. This is something that many conservatives would oppose, i would assume. The article revolves around Feinstein, who is not exactly Miss Popular in conservative eyes. The lede is one extremely long, run on sentence that goes forever without ever taking a break or using a comma or anything like that. I think it could be shortened, but i’m sure for the sake of writing more, more was used. I’ve also noticed the author of the article has been writing pieces about democrats lately; which is kind of interesting.

Kim Jung Un: Sexiest Man Alive 2012

This article cracks me up. I’ve taken a different approach, away from the political banter or middle east hoopla. This is an article reporting how China has once again fallen for satire in US news. Kim Jung Un, successor to Kim Jung Il, has been named The Onion’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2012, and it was reported as news in Chinese press.

This piece is nothing special, just a synopsis of the story. There’s no picture with it which takes away from the comical effect. I think a picture would make the article to be quite honest. I think considering all of the campaign ads making China the antagonist of America, this article pokes fun at our biggest competitor. This article isn’t newsworthy in the real sense of “news,” but I would assume it’s intention is to be a humorous little break from the serious issues on FoxNews.com

3.5/5 in my book.

FoxNews.com Link

This article covers the story about rocket attacks and fighting in Israel between Israelis and Hamas.

Unless you’re very keene on foreign affairs, foreign policy, or anything that goes on in the Middle East, this article IS NOT for you.

I think this is a very poor choice for a headline story. Unless this is meant to be a shot at Obama and foreign policy, it’s irrelevant.

The headline picture on the homepage shows a women screaming with another woman trying to calm her down. It doesn’t purvey the terror I was expecting so perhaps thats why I’m not looking at this article with very much concern.

I’m assuming this is the same aggressive contact on gaza strip that has been happening for the past couple years. Maybe we should send troops there!

News Comment #9–11.1.12

I’ll continue my trend in politics with this article.

FoxNews.com Article

According to this article, Hillary Clinton knew about the weaknesses of the embassy at Benghazi one month before the attack took place. I expect this from Fox News. Even though the attack took place a month and a half ago, they’re still coming out with new information. This concerns me. One, because I’m not seeing anything about this on CNN, MSNBC, or NBC. Two, it seems this is being down played because of the election. This article seems to imply a cover-up.

They use a few quotes from the State Department, but nothing of substance. The picture doesn’t really relate to the article. I think they should have used a picture of Hillary, or another higher-up.

This is a relevant story to the American public, but more specifically, relevant to conservatives. Overall, I’m not very impressed. The only positive I would take away is that they’re doing follow up on a very controversial issue, which is good.

Shooting by Jordan Jacupke

Shooting Audio

A local bride is in the hospital just hours after taking her vows, suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

It is alleged that shortly after the wedding at 617 S. Jackson street yesterday, the bride, Laurette Brunson, threw a bowl of macaroni salad at her new ‘hubby’, Richard Brunson, and he decided to fight food with a .22 caliber handgun; a seemingly unfair advantage.

Thirty relatives and friends at the couple’s home attended the ceremony, which began around 2PM, sources say. Around 5PM an argument broke out, leaving macaroni everywhere, and the bride on the floor, all shot’n stuff. We were able to speak briefly with Walter Corse, a neighbor of the Brunson’s.

Neighbors notified the authorities immediately. When the police arrived, Mr. Brunson was nowhere to be found. His whereabouts are still unknown.

Mrs. Brunson, however, is resting comfortably at St. Luke’s hospital, where hospital officials say she is in satisfactory condition.

So if you’re out there Mr. Brunson, you can finish the job at St. Lukes. 2720 Stonepark Blvd. Open Monday-Sunday, 24 hours.
