Just me talking about things

Creme de Pirouline

My mother used to buy Creme de Pirouline wafers when I was a kid and I always had fond memories of my mom essentially using them to bribe me and my siblings to do chores in exchange for one or two of them. These candy cane striped tubes smell like wheat, dark chocolate and childhood memories. There is a very satisfying crunch when I bit into the wheat cylinder and I was greeted by a lovely dark chocolate taste. The whole experience of eating this wonderful little guy made me nostalgic of my childhood and it was a lovely experience.

News comment, Trump at the UN

On Wednesday President Donald J. Trump gave a rambling 83 minute speech in which he described women accusing men of power of sexual assault as “evil people,” he attacked Canada over several issues, and was eventually laughed at by several key first world leaders.

Covering the bizarre antics of our acting president certainly isn’t an easy thing to do. Between the well documented cases of him stretching the truth, avoiding the truth, or outright lying and his boorish and often more than often vulgar language it can be difficult to paint him in any positive light. Of course this news conference does not make that easier. I think the writer of this piece did a good job with presenting the events of yesterday’s meeting in an accurate light and this was certainly a relevant story, it isn’t everyday that the “leader of the free world” is publicly mocked by the world’s most influential alliance.

Scavenger Hunt: An unexpected event

This assignment was certainly an interesting and I hated every minute of it. The first place I went to Eppley where I found a young student, probably a freshman, who was studying at a desk. I introduced myself to her and explained the assignment and that I was after a secret from one person, he overly quick response was, “One time I had sex with a girl at church camp.” I was taken aback by this but I figured I was this deep and this was going to be the best I was going to get so I asked how the experience was. She replied, “That was the best damn P**** I have ever had. She then asked to remain anonymous and I obligated.

My next objective was to find some unlucky fellow who was willing to give me a sample of their pocket lint. I found a man in Bueller Rolfs, he looked like an athletic fellow with a beard. I approached him and explained the assignment and did manage to get a nugget of fabric from his inner pocket. Ben, the student I spoke with, described the event as “Definitely different,” and was “It was a new experience for sure.”

South Carolina Braces for Storm

Hurricane Florence is projected to hit South Carolina this Tuesday. This category three storm is likely to delve high degrees of rainfall this category four storm is likely to be similar to Hurricane Harvey which caused an estimated 150-200 billion in damage and 63 fatalities. According to Accuweather Hurricane expert Dan Kottowski, “It’s very similar to Hurricane Harvey because Harvey was a slow-tracking hurricane which weakened to a tropical storm, and this could be the same kind of situation”

According to Time the rainfall amount is predicted to be anywhere from 10-15 feet with winds up to 140 miles per hour.

South Carolina is in in the direct projected path of the storm but according to Tim Smith of the Greenville News the state is ready to enact any and all evacuations measures such as mandatory evacuation zones and highway traffic reversals. The government in South Carolina has improved immensely since Hurricane Hugo struck the state in the late nineties. At the time mandatory evacuation zones and interstate lane reversals were not the norm but these have become standard procedure when tropical storms and hurricanes become apparent threats.

As Hurricane Florence grows strength and begins to approach being a category 5 that can bring sustained winds of over 156 miles per hour and up 20 feet of rain South Carolina has issued a mandatory evacuation of many coastal counties. It is estimated that over one million people will be displaced by the storm.

One symptom of the high winds that accompany category 5 hurricanes are “storm surges” which bring large waves that are at least ten feet high that often breach or destroy sea walls. However, the most dangerous part of a category 5 storm is torrential downpour which can drop feet of water in just minutes. It is rainfall of this sort that causes the greatest deal of inland flooding which leads to highways being covered, mudslides, and house flooding which can be lethal to anyone who does not follow evacuation orders

South Carolina governor Henry McMaster has said in a statement, “This is a real Hurricane we have coming. We don’t want to risk one South Carolina life.” The mandatory evacuations will begin at noon on Tuesday for many South Carolina counties and is predicted to displace over one million residents and visitors.

McCain’s Last Words Against Trump: Article Review

Today I read an article in the New York Times that was about the funeral services for late Senator John McCain and his public clashes with acting president, Donald Trump. I found that this article was well written enough but I think it was a poor choice to spend half the article focusing on how Trump would react to the funeral rather than focusing more on the life and times of a law maker and veteran with an remarkable and storied life all of his own.

Response to “Media Coverage of White Supremacists”

The NPR article that I read on the media’s coverage of White Supremacist groups and rallies raised many interesting ideas on the subject. The idea that White Supremacists rallies should simply be ignored was discussed in the article, I for one, do not like the idea of journalist completely ignoring a major event such as this even if it does create a platform for white supremacists because ignoring them gives them power as well. I did like the idea of limiting the coverage to pooled coverage with only one set of photography and video to grab from for all sources as it makes the story less prominent while still informing the general public who may want or need to know what is going on.
