Female Roles in Stranger Things

Stranger Things two, which was released this Halloween, has topped the ratings from when the show’s first season aired last year.

The Duffy brothers, the two creators of the show, did a pretty good job of learning from their inexperienced mistakes from last season and patching up some things or the current season.

The biggest criticism that they received from the first season was that of the lack of women roles in the show. There is an abundance of men that represent different aged roles in the show whereas there are only about one girl. Joyce the adult, Nancy the teen, and Eleven as the kid were the main girl roles in the first season. The rest of the roles were practically used as stand-ins.

Whereas in season 2 the Duffy brothers added Max, a kid who moved from California, to the group but throughout the show is mistreated and excluded from the group. Cody Selig says “I didn’t notice the lack of the female roll until they kept excluding Max.” And they also had an episode where Eleven found her mom and lost sister. Liz says “That episode was stupid. Don’t introduce 5 new characters if they’re never going to be seen again. Waste of my time.”

The big story is way they just forgot about Barb, Nancy’s best friend that was mysteriously taken by an extraterrestrial in Season one, and focused on Will who was in the same situation. In season two they touched more on how they just acted like everything was ok. She continued to say that everything was “bullshit” and this is where her mood towards Harrington changed. She went off with Jonathan to help bring down the Lab in Hawkins that was, what they thought, the source of Barb’s death.

All in all, the Duffy Brothers did recognize the criticism and tried to fix their mistakes that they started in season one. Even though they didn’t please everyone, they still got the result, in Season two, that they were looking for if not better as it got 15.8 million views for its premiere!

Who knows what’s to come next from the Duffy Brothers.

Everyone has a Story

Walking across the campus of Morningside College you walk past so many different faces and personalities. It is so easy to just put headphones in and nod to everyone passing but once you open up and try to interact with people you will be surprised with kind of people you have been walking past every day.

I experimented with this and it didn’t go well right away as I got a lot of general introductions. But after I stopped by a fellow Morningsider I saw standing outside the cafeteria, I finally got to find out a little more about them.

I found out Brian Howell, a transfer Junior here at Morningside is a sophomore business major from Idaho. He came here with his girlfriend and just fell in love with the athletics and small school atmosphere.

He said “I didn’t really know about this place until my girlfriend told me they contacted her. And after looking into it for awhile it was an easy decision or me to come here.”

Brian loves to play video games in his spare time. His favorite game is Battlefield on his Xbox.

I never would have known Brian if I didn’t start a simple conversation with him. It just goes to show the things you miss when you don’t pay attention to what is around you.

Emma Watson Story

Emma Watson, an actress that is most famous for her role in the Harry Potter movies as Hermione, speech that she gave at the One Young World summit on gender equality and the struggles of activism. One Young World is a UK-based charity that gathers young leaders to attempt to create a positive change in this world.

She starts off her speech by saying how it still comes to a shock to her that she is this strong of a voice in something that she never really saw herself being an “activist” for. She, lately, has been a strong supporter for women’s rights and gender equality as she said,

“I feel gender equality is as important as any other goals that we are here to discuss.”

And discuss she did as she continued on about the significant progress that the world has made in the cause for equality. She claims that she has finally found her “tribe” or group that she feels she belongs to.

“We, the entire spectrum of the feminist movement” she says, “are building an unstoppable current..”

This claiming that every person,  no matter what title, has a ripple effect on how this world operates and we need to unite and work together to make this world go round.

To finish it up she listed off sayings that go through her mind throughout the day and night that absolutely scare the shit out of her, but at the end of the day she knows that is exactly the ways that she wants to live her life.

Crunch Time is Destroying Video Game Designers/Developers

Most of the everyday person loves them and tend to struggle to put them down, video games that is.

The normal everyday video game player doesn’t know the entire backstory of how video games are designed and created. But the reason for them to be released faster and have thousands more of in-game updates than ever before is because of the overworking of the developers.

For some tasks that the developers give themselves, it is by choice. But when people are demanding a certain update in the game, it is hard to refuse that work to please their fans/followers.

Brett Douville, a veteran game programmer, said he once worked so long and for so hard that he found himself temporarily unable to step out of his car.

All workplaces have their stresses and negatives but when it comes to your personal health, it is another level that needs to be addressed by management.

Historical Collision in Space has Astronomers Rushing to their Telescopes

It was announced Monday that for the first time in history, the collision of two neutron stars occurred 130 million light-years away sending fireworks from the explosion across the universe.

The ripple caught by astronomer’s antennas sent them rushing to their telescopes to attempt to witness this historic moment.

Astronomers believe that this kind of explosion is what gave the earth gold, silver, and uranium. So you can thank the largest firework show in the universe for all the materials found in your wedding band!

These stars’ masses are as great as the sun but compact into a radius of just 12 miles long; about the size of Manhattan.

Neutron stars are the densest form of stable matter. So much so that if you add any more mass over a certain limit it would collapse into itself creating black hole.

Scientists have yet to find what that limit is, but after this historical finding I’m sure they are not too far behind on figure that out, as they learn something new every day.

Rappers Voice their Opinion the Best Way They Know How

Washington Rapper/Recording Artist Macklemore opened his concert in Arizona by bashing President Trump. Macklemore, a vocal non supporter of Trump, gave a speech during the concert on immigration and acceptance.

He says, “Everyone should be welcome here no matter which side of the ‘line’ you stood on.”

Macklemore also stated in his speech that he believes that everyone, no matter where you are from, should be able to have to opportunity to live the American Dream.

This act by the Washington rapper comes just days after World renowned rapper Eminem came out with his 5 minutes cypher bashing Donald Trump. It has been all over the news, talk shows, and social media about people’s thoughts and opinions.

A lot of celebrities have chimed in and backed Eminem up on this thoughts including Snoop Dogg, Macklemore, and other rappers.

It is a toss up for how Trump will respond but I am sure it will be controversial.

NCAA on the Hot Seat for Fraud Allegations

The NCAA has been hot on the radar as of the late fraud scandal that has leaked from an unknown ex player that has Louisville head coach Rick Pitino in more trouble.

Already under wraps for other allegations including violations tied to the hiring of escorts to have sex parties and strip for recruits and players.

The new allegations that have risen are those of coaches taking bribes from agents of well known brands to funnel the players to signing with the agents in order to bring them to that school as well as future plans of signing the players to those brands as they went pro.

Coach Sikes, Morningside College Men’s Basketball Coach, says “This is just the tip of the iceberg…there’s a lot of guys shredding documents and cleaning out file cabinets trying to get rid of a paper trail.”

There is going to be a lot more coming for this scandal. A lot aimed towards whether or not college athletes at the high level should be paid or have something chance where it helps them out financially.

Brad Roling, a good friend and fellow high school athlete of mine says, “I don’t think student athletes should be paid directly, but I believe that financially something should be done to help out student athletes so we don’t run into this situation again and prevent future allegations.”

There is a lot more to come with these issues and as Coach Sikes said this is just the tip of the iceberg and there are some deals that need to be figured out because this will be a huge hit on the NCAA. The players, and Pro Athletes as well will be thrown under the bus and a lot of money will be thrown around.

My take on this is that the companies that bribed the players should take a hit as well as the agents that conned them into taking the money. More than likely, there will be a few players that are going to be involved.

And speaking for majority of high school and college athletes I have talked to; if anybody was in their position they would do the exact same thing that those players did and take the deal. That is easy money in their pocket. The kind of money and deals that they have never dreamed of having.

So do I think anything big is going to happen, probably not. But it will have an effect on the future of big school recruiting and sponsorship of athletes.

The Seahawks Keep the Strangest Streak in NFL History Going.

Since Pete Carroll took over the head coaching job in 2010 the Seahawks have done what no other team in the NFL has ever done…8 years in a row.

The streak is that, since 2010, the Seahawks have had a score each year that no team has had in the NFL.

  • 2010—Seahawks 36, Cardinals 18
  • 2011—Seahawks 36, Giants 25
  • 2012—Seahawks 58, Cardinals 0
  • 2013—Seahawks 43, Broncos 8 (Super Bowl XLVIII)
  • 2014—Seahawks 36, Packers 16
  • 2015—Seahawks 39, Steelers 30
  • 2016—Seahawks 37, 49ers 18
  • 2017—Seahawks 46, Colts 18

You may not think of it as a big deal but as for Pete Carroll, he thinks “..it’s freaking awesome!”

It is partial credit to the great defense the Seahawks have creating safeties and a couple key missed field goals and extra points.

But no matter how the Seahawks achieve these scores. They are going to enjoy it until the streak is gone. But we’ll have to wait until next year to see if that streak doesn’t continue thanks to the 46-18 win over the Colts this past Sunday night.

Alex Watter’s Attitude of Gratitude. How Lucky am I?

The second that I walked into the room with Alex Watters I could feel passion in his voice. Finding out the reason for his passion struck me deep as he talked about his accident he had as a freshman here at Morningside college that left his paralyzed and unable to walk or have function in his hands.

Like most kids, he had plenty of dreams and goals that he wished for the future. He was asked if he never had his accident would he still have wanted to become an advisor for Morningside College and his answer was very abrupt.

“Not a chance in hell!” He said as he continued to say how his dream was to open a restaurant or own a golf course. With his accident he lost the ability to go out and enjoy the feel of golfing a round with himself or friends. “Golf was my place of peace…the sound is therapeutic.”

“When I was 18 all I wanted was golf, money, and girls…and not particularly in that order.”

Being a big food guy he didn’t really have a preference in what kind of food he would serve but he did say that he is a big dark beer guy. His favorite being Dragon’s Milk.

With his accident he chose to continue his life’s path by being an advisor for Morningside College and wanted to make a difference for other people and lead them on their right path.

Working with all these students makes Alex feel like the parent of them as he watches them on the playing field of their sport or thriving in their classes because he knows how hard they worked to get to that spot.

I take his message as he is helping these students realize that they need to take advantage of every opportunity they have because you never know what could happen. He sure didn’t, but for all that he accomplished since then shows how big of a heart Alex Watters has to give this world.
