Goddess religion and Elvis Presley

This Goddess religion is very similar in many ways to any other pilgrimage that we have studied. It has all of the aspects that they do and has some form of traveling involved. So I personally believe it is a pilgrimage and I still think that it is closely related to tourism.

It was definitely an interesting day in class since nobody really wanted to talk, but I still got something out of it and was able to further my education.

I just finished up reading the article about the Elvis Presley religion and it is very interesting to me that people can believe that a human that has passed away can fulfill their prayers and wishes. I think these people are just relating to themselves and the United States to Elvis’ life. They see he once was a very famous and popular guy and could influence any teenager girl out there. Then towards the end of his life he was losing control of his life and could not handle the pressure. This is happening to Americans daily and is occurring in America’s government and political system. I got that from the very last section of the article and I completely agree with it. I am looking forward to discussing it in class on Thursday.

Vanarasi and Benares

This was a very fun and interesting read since I have no background knowledge about the Hindu religion. It was a good experience, in the end, since I was actually able to participate in class and answer some question and make connections to previously learned things.

I found out that there is more than one pilgrimage that you can take and sometimes each one represents something different. One thing that surprised me was that the shortest pilgrimage was the one that only stayed in the temple. During this pilgrimage the devotee to Shiva would visit 72 different places in the temple in order to worship her, also known as Puja.

At the end of all five of the pilgrimages they meet at the Ganges River. Which is the main area where people go to bathe, wash animals, and perform Puja, and to get down to the river there are these steps called ghats that lead down to it. There is also a temple called Vishveshvara that is actually the starting point for all five of the pilgrimages.

Hinduism

I am pretty excited to be learning about another new religion. I was taught a little about the religion of Hindu and hopefully I can remember some of the information. The part of the reading that I did was interesting and had a lot of information in it. Class should help connect all of the information together, and show some of the Tithras in India. I would enjoy learning more about them and what a Hindu’s pilgrimage is like. The reading was saying that it is different than other religions.

Midterm exam

I know that we did not have to blog but I need to catch up some how. The midterm exam was actually easier to finish and get done than any of the other tests that i took. I felt that I was the most prepared for it than my other tests. I also felt that the information that I gained from the class was on the test and there was not any other information that we did not learn on the test.

I am not sure if I did that well but I felt comfortable at the end of it that I did my best. The multiple choice was the hardest since there was more than one answer, so I was never sure if I had all of the correct answers. The essays were not that hard to complete either, except for the last one.

Thursday’s activity

The activity on Thursday was extremely helpful with remembering the different steps in the Hajj. The activity made me make connections to things on campus, that I see everyday, and then connections with the actual steps of the Hajj. It was also a very fun, a good workout, and it helped with remembering the steps.

The book has been very interesting and I would recommend it to other people. I think that it is interesting because it fits the pilgrimage models that we have been learning about in Religion class.

Kevin is a very interesting person and is very open to new ideas and trying to new things. This trait is in some ways good and in some ways bad. He changes his views throughout the book because of this trait and now he has different views on Liberty students and how they really are. When his family makes a judging comment about Liberty students he is sort of offended because that is not always true about them.

I personally believe that the Turner pilgrimage is closer to what happened to Kevin rather than the Eliade pilgrimage. He leaves Brown, his family, and his old life at college, the world of convention, and departs to Liberty and starts learning the Liberty way; the Limin. He now is trying to meet new people. In this process he forgets about his old life because he cannot maintain the two worlds at once. Another anti structure could have been the Liberty way because it broke down his old habits and how he used to think. Then he starts to rebuild a new community with the students at Liberty and with the students on his hall. The metaphorical death is when he stops having the same outlook on the Liberty students, he prays daily, and he has different ethical views, now. He then returns to Brown, his family, and his old life; and now he is a changed person and does not have the same outlook on life.

Sacred Space and Liminality

Sacred Space was a very interesting section to read but at first it was hard to understand what the real point was. Then when I went to class on Tuesday and that helped me understand what all of the sections where trying to say. When we split into groups and drew pictures of your sections of the reading and presented them to the rest of the class it answered my question about the imago mundi and what it symbolized and many others.

It also helped to see the diagram of the axis mundi or the ladder leading to heaven or to the underworld. I liked how there are many different axis mundis in the world and it just depends on what you believe in and where you are located at that defines your axis mundi. It could be a large monument in the middle of your town or just some central point in your home that everything revolves around. When you build something you have to perform a blood sacrifice inorder for the gods to accept the building and you want to as close to the axis mundi as possible because that is where it is most and real and there is no chaos or evils.

The reading over Liminality was pretty confusing to me and hopefully my questions are answered in class today, I am pretty sure that they will be.

Durkheim’s views

After reading about all four of those highly acknowledged theorists my thought of religion was changed a little bit. They had points that were somewhat similar and points that were totally different; allowing me to see more than one side and to see the similarities that are common in their minds.

I personally believe that Durkheim was the one that defined religion the best, to me, but that is probably because I come from a Christian family and a family that believes in the rites and rituals performed by Christians. So, I can connect his ideas to my life quite easily; for example the rites and rituals that my whole entire community performs such as baptisms, Christmas, or praying. All of these items have to do with Durkheim’s idea of rites and rituals, and they also have to deal with idea that religion is part of communities. Most of the activities are done in front of the congregation or they are mentioned and we have days set aside to celebrate them in church . In my church, during baptisms, the congregation has to answer the question if we will raise the child or person in a good and healthy Christian environment. This is just evidence that religion is a part of my community and we are to support other Christians.

My Christian denomination is Methodist and it has things that are considered to be taboos. Actually all Christians have the Ten Commandments that are taboos, and we are not supposed to perform those acts. It is believed that if a person preformed the acts they will be judged and possibly go to Hell.
