First day of class Interview

I recently had the opportunity to get to know my new classmate Tracie Tuttle a bit after interviewing her on the first day of class. And although the interview only lasted about five minutes I feel like I learned a good amount about Tracie. Tracie is 20 years old and has lived in the town of Cherokee, Iowa her whole life. Although she says she doesn’t miss home when she is here at school since it is a small town with little to do, resulting in an uneventful and rather boring summer. She has a younger sister who is 14 and three cats who she says are the only things she misses when she is at school.

Tracie is beginning her Junior year with a major in Studio Art and Minors in both Journalism and Graphic Design. When asked about her feelings towards this upcoming year Tracie said she expects this year to be her “busiest but most rewarding” since she is “much more involved on campus now” than she “has been in the past” yet Tracie “cant wait to see what this year takes” her.

In terms of involvement, Tracie is not only the president of Morningside’s art club, she also works for the art department through work study. Truly highlighting her interest in art.

A Del taco free shavacado employee was also questioned. She claimed to have seen no suspicious activity either. At the time of the explosion she says “I was just behind the counter serving tacos dudes”. She also stated that being in the food court at the center of the mall she was far enough to avoid injury but also didn’t see what happened.

The Mall Santa was working just next to the explosion area when the explosion occurred. Profile of Matthew Stogdill

Well known and easily recognizable from his hair, dress clothes, and larger than life personality. Matthew Stogdill is a 22-year-old senior at Morningside College from Urbandale, Iowa.

One of Matthew’s closest friends is Cade Herrig, another Morningside Student. Cade and Matthew first met in 2015 through the Sinfonia, the college’s music fraternity. Through this the two grew close very quickly and have remained good friends since.

When asked to describe Matthew’s character, Cade took a moment to think and then said “Matthew Stogdill is the epitome of a ‘c-student’, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I mean it in that he always meets what is expected of him, he doesn’t exceed expectation and he doesn’t fail them, usually.”

Cade described his relationship with Matthew as very fun filled and constant in a way that felt like they never are apart. Because of this he failed to remember any single instances that would highlight Matthew’s more eccentric and fun loving side. But he did state that they are constantly having fun shenanigans and that their friendship is “just one continuous positive interaction”

Another good friend of Matthew’s in Jesseca Ormond, who has been friends with him since 2016. The two first met through a mutual good friend who Matthew lived with.

Jesseca described Matthew as a “funny, caring, individual who is very passionate about his interest.”

Jesseca also said that Matthew is “very relaxed, even if the stress of school might be boiling under the surface,” and because of this, “people like being around him”.

One story Jesseca recalled about Matthew which both highlighted his relaxed mood and eccentric, and rather erratic behavior happened when she was working at the coffee shop on campus “He nonchalantly bought both a monster and a venti coffee. Like I was sure he was going to have a heart, but I sold it to him anyway. but he was so calm about his looming deadliness”

Finally, Matthew was asked to reflect upon himself and his behavior. When asked to describe himself, Matthew claimed to be someone who is very charismatic, a people person, and fun loving. One story he brought up to highlight this was last winter when helping a group of friends. Matthew and others were helping unbury a friend’s car after a blizzard using shovels and any other tools they could find, after an hour of working at this one of the shovels broke. Rather than just throwing the shovel away as others suggested, Matthew arranged a burial for the shovel. Matthew, who is a trumpeter, played TAPS for the shovel as it was lowered into a small grave which he dug. Then eulogies were given and finally the shovel was buried.

When reflecting on his life as a whole Matthew claimed to be “very eccentric and larger than life” and because of this he has had the opportunity to live through many unique experiences.

Aside from embarking on fun loving adventures, Matthew ‘s hobbies include reading fiction novels, playing video games that are heavily story driven, eating, sleeping, and taking care of his vast array of fish amongst other things.

To highlight the passion taken in his hobbies, especially fish keeping, Matthew even spent a good portion of his interview describing each of the fish he owns using their full names and even attempting some of the scientific names and giving brief descriptions of their behaviors.

One of Matthews two biggest interest include music and history, both of which he has studied in college. When beginning college Matthew was originally a vocal performance major, but due to an array of issues within the music department which he claimed were “leading to the overall deterioration of the department” he eventually switched to a public history major with an emphasis in museum studies.

The story I chose to focus on this week comes from NBC.com. The story focuses on the death of a teenager and his parents response to the accident which killed him. The teenager was killed in an accident when filming a stunt to post to his social media. For the stunt, the teenager and his friends paid an Uber driver to allow them to car surf, where a person hangs on to the roof of a moving car for as long as they can.  While performing the stunt, the teenager fell off and landed on his head receiving brain damage that would lead to his death later on in the hospital. The parents speaking publicly for the first time warned others of the dangers of allowing social media popularity to influence irresponsible and dangerous activity.

This story would be categorized as a negative story since it focuses around the death of a teenager. This story is important because it highlights the issues of social media and its influence on younger generations. It shows how younger generations are becoming more and more obsessed with gaining popularity online and as a result they are doing more and more risky activities, such as car surfing.

Anecdote on Matthew Stogdill

Anecdote

For my interview I hope to focus on Matthew Stogdill, one of my best friends and one of the most fun loving and eccentric people I know.  A great story to highlight this was in sophomore year when Matthew and I were roommates. We are both big ‘Star Wars’ fans and would constantly binge on the movies and shows. We also would talk about how much we would love to be in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. To this avail, Matthew decided to make our own. He went to Walmart and purchased to light saber toys and spent the day working on battle choreography using his past experience from fencing. Then at 2 am he gave me the light saber and explained the choreography to me. We then went outside on to bass field in the snow and had a 20-minute light saber fight. We were laughing the whole time and loving every minute of it, despite the below freezing temperature and lack of warm clothes.

Article #3 interviews w/ transcript

Article #3 interview transcript

Interview #1

Me: For my first interview I chose to focus on the struggles faced by college seniors and how they are preparing for life after college. For this I interviewed Lorena Ruiz who is set to graduate in December.

Me: So, first question is um, what are some of the biggest challenges for you in your senior year?

Lorena: Probably trying to handle the schoolwork and applying for jobs at the same time.

Me: How would you say this year is different from your other years in college.

Lorena: Um, because it does feels like I’m doing everything for the last time.

Me: And what are you doing now to like kind of prepare yourself more for like the now the final push?

Lorena: I’m definitely getting my resume looked at by people who know better than me. I’m talking to my advisors, my professors trying to make those connections, trying to reach out to those connections I made like earlier in my college career.

Me: Alright thank you for your time.

Me: Lorena’s interview gives us a small glimpse of the lives of seniors preparing to leave college and highlights some of the struggles they face as they prepare to start out in the real world

Interview #2

Me: For my next interview, I chose to focus on the political activity of youth in America today. For this I interviewed Matthew Stogdill, a rather politically outspoken student.

Me: With everything with the new social media campaigns and everything that’s been going on how do you feel that youth involvement in politics ahs changed in America?

Matthew: I think that, um, the youth are getting a lot more involved. I think its easier for candidates to reach younger people.  And I certainly think that, um, social media has given a new rise to, uh, student activism and makes it a little more popular and its easier for students to get into this type of activism

Me: How do you think this has impacted you directly?

Matthew: Um, well I’m certainly, I’ve certainly become a lot more liberal. I was, uh, I was raised as a cornbread Iowa, Iowa boy with a strong republican influence in my life… basically a drastic change.

Me: Did you vote in the last election?

Matthew: I did

Me: And um how much of an impact do you think that you made?

Matthew: So, I feel like, uh, in a sense I made a pretty significant impact because district four in Iowa is so, uh, low population.

Me: As Matthew’s interview has shown, America’s political structure is beginning to evolve in order to include younger generations and this has led to major changes in the culture of young voters.

Interview #3

Me: For my final interview I chose to focus on a topic that resonates with me, what it is like to relocate to Sioux city from a completely different area. For this I interviewed Jesseca Ormond an international student from Antigua.

Me: Um, what are the biggest, what were the biggest challenges for you when you moved here?

Jesseca: Just getting accumulated to the weather and, I don’t know changes in time zone and also um, I guess just people on a whole. Like everyone here is really nice it’s the same in the Caribbean but people are really passive aggressive and in the Caribbean you learn to always be up front so I’m a very blunt person

Me: And what are some things that you like about Iowa, if anything?

Jesseca: * laughter* I actually like the people that I met here, um, my friends. I also like that Sioux city on a whole is not a huge city, there’s good and bad in that, but I appreciate it being smaller because, I was gonna say like at home we have like the same population and I like that. It’s a, you get to make more deeper connections and um. When I was actually coming here, flying in through New York I had my suitcases and I was going on an elevator to get to the air train and I walked in and I was like “hello”. And everyone just stared at me like “what the F” you know like “who are you we don’t say hi”. So I was like “ok”

Me: What’s the main thing you dislike about Sioux City or about living here?

Jesseca: The weather and being landlocked. Um I had a routine like all my life, I’d get up in the morning go to the beach get prepared for the day. Like not even to go into the water, just to stay and listen to the waves and center myself then at night I’d come back and decompress. And I don’t have that here it’s not the same with a lake.

Me: As this interview shows, students can face many struggles including culture shock and environmental changes when moving to Sioux city, however the friendly community of Morningside can help ease the blow.

Class Discussion Profile

The profile I chose comes from CNN and can be found at https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/12/entertainment/stan-lee-obit/index.html?no-st=1542079053.

The article was written about famed Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee who died earlier today. The article is a profile of Stan Lee’s life with Marvel Comics and the impact he had on the larger world of “comicbooks” ,as he demand they be referred to, and entertainment.

The frame of the story is very clear as being about Lee’s time with Marvel and the evolving history of comicbooks. While it does sometimes divulge into his personal life and life outside of marvel, it does so very little and does not add much to the profile.

The frame includes details from the first big assignments given to Lee at Marvel, what Lee did differently in his characters that made them stand out, the struggles faced by Marvel, and the rise in Marvel’s popularity and expansion to pop culture.

The frame does leave out many details about Lee’s life both in and outside of Marvel. They do not reference his beginnings with Marvel or his time as an army playwright during ww2 . They also leave many details out regarding his role with Marvel outside of being a figurehead. They do not discuss his family or personal life and also leave out some detail regarding his role as a pop culture icon.

News comment 11/8

For this  comment I chose to focus on an article from CNN.

The article tells of a Dutch man who is currently in a legal battle with the government in order to legal change is age by 20 years. The man who is 69 years old claims that if people can change their name and change their gender, then he can change his age.

When asked why he wants to change his name, the man cited three main reasons. First he feels 20 to 25 years younger than he is and therefore identifies with a younger age. second, he claims he is constantly discriminated against by society and employers due to his age. Finally, and most importantly to him, he claims that being forced to identify as 69 years old has damaged his online dating profiles and result in few responses. However he claims that if he can identify as 49 years old and with ‘his good looks’ he will have no shortage of women waiting on him.

This story stood out to me for, so many reasons. First of all it is a very bizarre story and one that i was definitely not expecting to find. Honestly, this is probably one of the strangest stories i have ever read that didn’t begin with the words “florida man”. Second it is a bit sensational especially in regards to the man’s reasonings for the age change and it made the story that much more entertaining to read.

Tracie Tuttle interview #2

Interview of Tracie Tuttle

Tracie Tuttle is a 20-year-old Morningside Student from Cherokee, Iowa.  She is a junior in college and is majoring in Studio Art with minors in graphic design and journalism. Because of her major and long standing interest in art, Tracie considers herself an artistic person.

To add to this, Tracie discussed a recent art piece she finished. The piece, titled ‘Trip City’ and is actually a second version of a piece she created in the past. The original piece was never completed and after being stored in Tracie’s home after she moved to Morningside was repurposed by her mother as a kitty litter box. Tracie however was not hurt by this but took it as an opportunity to say “I have literally had shit on my art” and chooses to look on the positive more than the negative. She also sees it as having given her an opportunity to tell people a fun fact when showing them the second version. The second version was completed last night at 6 AM.

Aside from being an artistic person, Tracie is also the oldest of two with a 14-year-old sister. She also has three cats who she misses when she is at school.  Ultimately, Tracie is looking forward to graduation and to see what the future holds for her in her art career.
